Glamour and Green EXCLUSIVE: Jane Iredale Gluten-Free Lip Fixation Giveaway! June 8, 2010

Jane Iredale_ Lip Fixation I’ve been a huge fan of Jane Iredale cosmetics for a while now. I even used their foundation and lipstick on my wedding day.

Jane Iredale is the epitome of good-for-you cosmetic luxury. Dipped in beautiful gold-colored packaging and available in gorgeous shades, this line is based on minerals and all-natural ingredients. Most of the Jane Iredale products are gluten-free and they are all pretty much fabulous.

I discovered Jane Iredale products a few years ago at a high-end salon & spa and have been hooked ever since. I’m a slave to their Liquid Minerals Foundation. It’s become one of my cosmetic-staple items. All I need is my foundation (and some mascara & gloss) and I’m ready for anything.

I love browsing the Jane Iredale website for all the latest & greatest makeup treats. It seems like they are always adding new and exciting gluten-free makeup goodies to their line.

So what’s new with Jane now? Two words, my fabulous friends: Lip Fixation. Lip Fixation is the brand-new lip stain & gloss duo that leaves your lips gorgeous for hours! I would know. I tried it.

“Do double-beauty duty with two products in one. Each Lip Fixation boasts a lip stain and lip gloss in complimentary colors handpicked for the season. Choose between Desire, Fascination and Craving, or better yet, succumb to all three.

Fortified with the natural plumping properties of ginger root extract and the moisturizing power of avocado oil, these ultra-hydrating, long lasting shades can go from the boardroom to the beach boardwalk without losing their intensity.”

I’m a big-time lipstick girl, and there’s nothing worse than having to constantly re-apply lipstick, so I was super-excited about this all-new lipstick stain. I like to talk and eat a lot (duh! hehe), so I’m always having to bust out my regular glosses and re-apply. And that’s annoying. I hate having to re-apply lipstick at a restaurant in front of friends, waiters, and staff. It’s such a bother to “freshen up” your shade when your out and about and it’s not professional to re-apply in front of your co-workers at work. So, having a lip stain that lasts through long hours in meetings, gluten-free munching, or much-needed socializing? Brilliant, Jane!

I tried Lip Fixation in the Desire shade ($29) at my baby shower the other day. Desire is a gorgeous natural brown shade with a slight hint of pink. It’s a beautiful color that compliments my skin and makes my lips stand out without being obvious (like a bright red lipstick or coral shade). It went on smooth & matte and even smells slightly like Life Savers in the Butter Rum Flavor (random, I know, but that’s a good thing. Yummm….).

I let it dry for one minute. Then I simply flipped it over and used the gloss (that had beautiful, very subtle sparkles!) for a pretty, complete lip-look. With all the eating, drinking, and baby/labor/birth-talk that went on for three hours at my baby shower, my lips still looked great! I definitely could have re-applied the gloss, but my lips were still stained! It was awesome and it was so nice to not worry about re-doing my lipstick in front of everyone at the shower, so I could just enjoy it, smile for the cameras, and have fun!

Lip Fixation is like the Batman & Robin duo- the perfect team of stain and gloss to keep your lips looking colored & fantastic for the office, out with friends, or anytime you want pretty lip-color without the annoyance of it wiping away soon after using. It’s awesome stuff, worth the price, and may even become one of your cosmetic-staple items too!

Talk, eat, and pout those lips as much as you want, girls… Lip Fixation will let you do it!! 🙂

Non-Alcoholic Gluten-Free Indulgences May 25, 2010

Pink Champagne Body Lotion and Scrub I’m all about a glass of champagne, opening a good bottle of wine, or sipping on a fabulously decadent martini… but when you’re pregnant (like me) that just can’t happen. It’s been close to a year since I’ve enjoyed an adult beverage and I look forward to the day I can have a nice meal alongside a good Riesling once again.

But until then, what’s a gluten-free pregnant lady to do? My sister had the solution. As a (soon-to-be) mother’s day gift, she sent me gluten-free 100% Pure Champagne Body Scrub & Body Lotion! It’s amazing stuff! It really does smell like champagne & grapes!! It has a sweet smell to it, the scent lasts a long time, and I love using it! My husband loves it too. Whenever I wear it he freaks out about how good I smell.

And only a few weeks later, my lotion is completely gone. I’ve slathered it all over my growing belly and feel like I can indulge in my favorite adult “beverages” without getting tipsy and causing my baby any harm! Yay. All the fun of alcohol without any of the yucky side effects. No drowsiness, no hang-overs…  🙂

Another reason I feel good about using this lotion and body scrub? It’s gluten-free, which means I won’t be absorbing gluten into my pores and possibly getting myself or the baby sick, but it’s also organic & chemical-free.

I don’t think I can go back to regular lotions now. Not only because this one smells so good, but it worries me about what I’ve been slathering all over my tummy throughout this pregnancy. What kinds of lotion-chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and affect my baby- even if it’s only in very small amounts? Hmmm…. I think it’s better to be safe then sorry and use products like 100% Pure that leave your skin soft and do so without scary artificial/toxic ingredients.

Victoria Secret has a strawberries and champagne lotion too, but it can’t even compare to 100% Pure’s Pink Champagne lotion. 100% Pure’s smells so much better (and sweeter), but also Victoria Secret’s smells so much like chemicals now… Maybe it’s just my “pregnancy nose,” but I can’t use any of their lotions lately without feeling like I’m slathering on cleaning products.

Gluten-Free Paprika Shrimp and Green Bean Saute March 24, 2010

Try a Gluten-Free Shrimp Recipe from Eating Well I tried this DELISH recipe about 7 months ago and it was awesome. Now that I’m pregnant though, I am avoiding seafood (among other pregnancy “no-no” foods) and, obviously, can’t eat shrimp.

Boy, do I miss it.

I’ve heard of pregnant women that crave bad-stuff like paint chips, cigarette butts, and dirt (thankfully, I am NOT one of them!), but I do want the totally off-limits seafood. My mouth starts to water when I think about shrimp nachos, shrimp with cocktail sauce, shrimp sautéed in garlic and butter, or shrimp sprinkled all over a gluten-free pizza.  MMmmmmm….

I’m reminded of “Bubba” from the movie Forrest Gump, and how all he ever talks about is shrimp and the different ways that you can cook it. …Well, with the way I want to eat shrimp, I could listen to Bubba talk about shrimp all day. I wouldn’t mind a bit. I’d probably join in.

So, since I can’t indulge in my shrimp-obsession for, at the very least, another three months, do me a favor and enjoy a shrimp dinner yourself. Try this gluten-free Paprika Shrimp and Green Bean Saute recipe from Eating Well. It’s easy and awesome:

Ingredients
  • 4 cups green beans, trimmed (about 12 ounces)
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 pound raw shrimp, (21-25 per pound; see Note), peeled and deveined
  • 2 16-ounce cans large butter beans, or cannellini beans, rinsed
  • 1/4 cup sherry vinegar, or red-wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste

*Use organic ingredients and spices when you can!

Preparation
  1. Bring 1 inch of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Put green beans in a steamer basket, place in the pan, cover and steam until tender-crisp, 4 to 6 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and paprika and cook, stirring constantly, until just fragrant but not browned, about 20 seconds. Add shrimp and cook until pink and opaque, about 2 minutes per side. Stir in beans, vinegar and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through, about 2 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup parsley.
  3. Divide the green beans among 6 plates. Top with the shrimp mixture. Sprinkle with pepper and the remaining 1/4 cup parsley.
Yummy Gluten-Free Shrimp Recipes Tips & Notes
  • Note: Shrimp is usually sold by the number needed to make one pound. For example, “21-25 count” means there will be 21 to 25 shrimp in a pound. Size names, such as “large” or “extra large,” are not standardized. In recipes calling for a specific count, order by the count (or number) per pound to be sure you’re getting the size you want.
  • To peel shrimp, grasp the legs and hold onto the tail while you twist off the shell. Save the shells to make a tasty stock: Simmer, in enough water to cover, for 10 minutes, then strain. The “vein” running along a shrimp’s back (technically the dorsal surface, opposite the legs) under a thin layer of flesh is really its digestive tract.
  • To devein shrimp, use a paring knife to make a slit along the length of the shrimp. Under running water, remove the tract with the knife tip.

Gettin’ Your Gummy On! March 4, 2010

Try Lil Critters Gummy Vites! Vitamins are usually the least glamorous thing on the planet. It’s like medicine… who wants to pop yucky pills every day to get a few extra nutrients, right? Sometimes I’d rather have a brussel sprout-spinach-kale-salmon-almond-and-blueberry-smoothie instead of taking my daily vitamin! Yeah… vitamins are THAT gross. 🙂

And if that wasn’t bad enough, I called a bunch of vitamin companies to inquire about their ingredients, and after listening to elevator music (for what seemed like FOREVER), none of the companies could confirm that their products were gluten-free! Many of them said that there could be gluten cross-contamination from other products that they manufactured as well. Uggh. I hung up the phone many, many times feeling frustrated… and totally confused!

Well, when my husband and I got pregnant (yay! I am currently 24 weeks pregnant with my first baby- a little boy!), I was even more concerned about getting gluten-free vitamins. Every pregnancy book or magazine you read, it states in bold print: YOU NEED TO TAKE PRENATAL VITAMINS. Besides getting the nutrients you need to make a baby, getting at least 40 mg of Folic Acid is  apparently absolutely critical to help avoid super-scary baby-health problems!

I felt like I was going to have a panic attack as prenatal vitamins were impossible to come by too! I even ask my Gynecologist if she had any gluten-free prenatal vitamins and even she wasn’t sure that any they had were GF! Yikes!

So, imagine my RELIEF when I came across a brand of gluten-free vitamins! And not your ordinary gluten-free variety…  GUMMY BEAR GLUTEN-FREE VITAMINS!!!

WARNING: Lil’ Critters Gummy Bear Vitamins are sooo unbelievably good, you’ll want to eat them like, well, REAL gummy bear candies!

These gummy-vitamins are super soft and chewy, and REALLY, taste just like candy. They’re totally fabulous! And guess what? Gummy Vites have no wheat, gluten, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts or soy. They also have no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. …SWEET!

I asked my OBGYN if I could take these gluten-free vitamins for my prenatal vitamins, and she said yes! I just take two a day, and I’m good to go!

I absolutely love these vitamins and think their perfect for any kid or adult that doesn’t want vitamin-time to be torturous! Life should always be delicious- even when you’re being healthy!
