Mmmm! Tasty Gluten-Free Granola: Bakery on Main January 25, 2011

Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola As you know, I’ve been working hard to eat better. But just because I want to eat better, doesn’t mean I want to sacrifice on flavor. I’m just not one of those girls that can be perfectly happy snacking on carrot sticks and lettuce leaves all day (…do those kind of girls really exist?!!). A diet of deprivation is not OK with me. But turn those lettuce leaves and carrots into a tasty salad rich with almonds, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, raisins, some fresh, organic chicken, and lightly drizzled with olive oil?… Ooohhh! I’m SO “that” girl.

I believe that choosing healthy foods that are satisfying are the key to eating well-success. So far, it seems to be true.

That’s why my latest gluten-free discovery, incredibly-tasty gluten free granola from Bakery on Main is my new must-have item. Bakery on Main is good stuff!! Around 11 am and 2-3 pm every day, my hunger starts to show up and it’s “make or break time.” It’s not quite lunch and it’s not quite dinner. It’s up to me to choose a healthy snack that will help me feel full and satisfied until my next meal. This is also the time that sweets and treats sound so good.

But my yummy gluten-free granola has been helping me keep on track. One of my favorite healthy snacks is making myself a cup of gluten-free organic vanilla yogurt, with 1-2 tbsp of Bakery on Main’s GF granola, and some blueberries. Omg. So awesome. I feel like I am eating ice cream with fruit and a crumbled candy bar on top. And I really mean it! It really takes away my cravings for junk food away and replaces it with a nutrient-rich alternative that is actually satisfying!

So what makes it so satisfying? It’s filled with all-natural, good-for-you ingredients like corn flakes, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, cranberries, almonds, pecans, and much more, it’s impossible to have a few bites without feeling great. Just because it’s gluten-free doesn’t mean that they have to use weird ingredients or flours to make it. Nope. Just gluten-free oats & corn flakes, delicious, all-natural nuts and fruit. The nuts in this tasty granola fill me up with healthy protein and fat (and don’t be scared of healthy fat, my gluten-free friends! Getting these essential oils from healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, and nuts are what keep us full, satisfied, and are great for our skin, nails, and hair).

Two of my Bakery on Main favorites? First, the Nutty Cranberry Maple Granola. OMG, ridiculously good!!! The Maple Cranberry has the perfect combination of slightly salty from nuts with the hint of sweet maple. It’s absolutely delicious! Every bite is filled with crunch and chewy bits of natural goodness. These satisfying snacks just totally hit the spot.

And second, the Chocolate Almond bar is incredible! When almonds are in their natural state, have you ever noticed that they have slight taste of cherry to them? Well, the fresh almonds in this bar have that ever so slight-cherry taste, and it’s amazing! The bar is the perfect little snack to satisfy my sweet-tooth without blowing my diet, and helps curb my appetite for an hour or two. I like the bars because they’re great for tossing my in purse or car and eating them on the go or when I’m out and about and need a snack.

There are a bunch of delicious different flavors of Bakery on Main GF granola and GF granola bars. They are ALL good. Try them all and decide on your favorites by ordering the Bakery on Main Gift Box for an assortment of flavors, and even get a free eco-friendly tote bag with your purchase!

Whatcha waiting for? Begin eating gluten-free foods that are packed with nutrients and taste good too! Get Bakery on Main’s delcious gluten-free granola products and stock up. Trust me, once you try it, this granola will soon be a must-have item in your pantry too! 🙂

This is the Bakery On Main Story:

It all started in the small bakery of a natural foods market on Main Street in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Founder Michael Smulders listened to his Celiac customers complain about the taste of many of the gluten free options available to them. He thought that no one should have to suffer because of a food allergy or other special dietary need, and made it his mission to create products that were good for them but taste like they aren’t.

Late in 2003, after tasting a granola recipe one of the bakers was working on, Smulders said, “these gluten free people need granola!” He walked through the store and gathered ingredients and baked the first batch that day. It took almost 2 years to find gluten free sources of all the ingredients and find a place where we could make the product without risk of cross-contamination.
Three years and two bakeries later, their gluten free granola is made in a 34,000 square foot manufacturing facility with state of the art quality controls and in-house gluten testing on every batch. Located just a few miles down the road from the original bakery, the plant maintains the small bakery quality by continuing to bake in small batches.

Thank you Mr. Smulders!!!!!!!! 🙂

Don’t Be Glum- Try Gluten-Free Glee Gum! April 12, 2010

Gluten Free Gum Besides regular bread, one of the things I’ve missed most about going gluten free is gum.

Gum seems like such a staple-item, doesn’t it? When you’re out and about, tiny designer clutch in hand, it might only include a few things, but you never leave home with some sort of small wallet, your cell phone, your favorite lipstick… and gum.

Or what about date night? If your single or dating, gum is simply hands-down a MUST-HAVE, without-a-doubt item.

Thank goodness I’ve been married to the most precious man for a few years now and don’t have to have perfectly minty-fresh breath after scarfing down a grilled steak and onion dinner with a big side of delicious garlic mashed potatoes! But c’mon, let’s be honest: Poor guy. I am sure my after-dinner kisses just aren’t as sweet. haha. 🙂

Besides worrying about the gluten-contamination that gum could have (wouldn’t that be such a sad way to ruin date night? A little piece of gluten-filled gum and the fun is totally over as I writhe in pain), but nowadays I’m so aware of what goes in my mouth, gum seems so toxic.

What the heck is in gum, anyway?! Most of the ingredients in gum I can’t even pronounce! But the ingredients I do know of are artificial sweeteners that just can’t be good for my body. I’d rather eat organic sugar by the spoonful than consume that scary artificial sweetener stuff. How many artificial sweeteners have been linked to causing health problems- like cancer?! I know several have. I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist, but in my opinion, it’s not worth it.

And as normal as it seems to chew gum, perhaps it’s a lot more hazardous than most of us realize?

If your like me, avoiding gum since going gluten free, and have been totally depressed about suffering with troll-breath after eating your favorite, potent-smelling foods, be glum no longer, my friends…

Gluten Free Glee GumI was SO ridiculously excited to discover GLEE GUM (what a perfect name, huh?!).

Glee Gum is gluten-free and made with wonderful, ALL-NATURAL ingredients!! WHOO-HOO!

Glee Gum is all-natural, gluten-free chewing gum with no artificial coloring, flavoring, sweeteners nor preservatives. Glee Gum is the only gum in North America made the old-fashioned way, with chicle! Chicle is a natural tree sap harvested sustainably from the rainforests of Central America. Once all chewing gum was made with chicle, but today most gum is made entirely from synthetic stuff. Not Glee Gum! Glee Gum uses chicle because it is an eco-friendly way to help conserve the rainforest. Chicle is also what gives the gum such great, long-lasting chewing texture! Glee Gum is a “green” gum right down to the packaging, which is made from biodegradable, recycled cardboard. So chew with Glee, naturally!

It comes in SIX great flavors: cinnamon, peppermint, tangerine, bubblegum, spearmint, and triple berry. Glee Gum is the #1 healthy alternative to synthetic chewing gum and bubble gum! With no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners (no aspartame), or preservatives, it’s easy to chew Glee-fully!

This is BY FAR the best gluten free gum, I’ve ever found. And besides being gluten free, it’s so comforting to know you’re not chewing a piece of toxic waste (and being good to the earth at the same time)! Whenever I pop a few pieces of gum in my mouth, I feel happy knowing I’m making a healthy choice to keep my health in tact!

Not to mention, Glee Gum tastes great and the packaging is absolutely adorable! It has a very retro-type look about it. I can envision myself wearing a pink poodle skirt and sitting at a cute 50’s diner every time I pop a few Glee Gum’s in my mouth. 🙂 It makes me happy.

The packaging is cute enough you’ll totally want to keep some in your purse, your car- everywhere- and show it off to your friends. This gum ends up being more than just gluten-free gum- it’s a fashion statement that goes well with bright red vintage-looking lipstick. 🙂

I’m a huge fan of the Peppermint flavor; it’s great to use as your “default” gum. After dates, dinner/meals, when you need a “quick lift” to refresh your palate, this is the flavor to pick.

But just for any time fun, I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Wee Glee- a 1 oz. loose gum box filled with a tasty mix of four fun flavors: Tangerine, Triple Berry, Bubblegum, and Banana! The fruit flavors were so yummy, fun to mix, and didn’t have any kind of weird after-taste. I felt like a kid again when I chewed this gum; I loved these all-natural fruit flavors!

Tip: I find that three pieces (they come in little square gum pieces, not gum strips) works well for one gum-sitting. I also notice that the flavor fades sooner than with regular gum. At first I was a little bummed because the flavor is so yummy (and the gum is so good for me, health-wise), but then I thought… Ya know what? Maybe I should remember that it’s unnatural for something’s flavor to last and last and last… and last… If you had a real piece of food in your mouth, you wouldn’t expect the flavor to linger hours later!! I think this gum totally does it’s job- makes your mouth feel minty and fresh (or fruity and fresh) and lasts long enough to feel good about it. If you want more gum, get a few new pieces and start over again! No big deal. 🙂

Become a fan of Glee Gum and show your support by trying some awesome gum for yourself by buying online or finding a store near you, read their newsletter (you’ll get special discounts off your gum purchases!), and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace!

Try Glee Gum and be gleefully gluten-free!

Spring Get-Aways: Travel with Fabulous Gluten-Free Toiletries March 29, 2010

Gluten-Free Must-Have Toiletries After what seems like a looooooooong and cold winter, I am getting stir-crazy! I need to run away with my husband to somewhere warm, sunny, and by the beach!

If you’re planning a spring vacation, a babymoon (like me), or a little weekend get-away, it’s time to stock up on gluten-free traveling essentials!

And if you’re not planning a spring vacation, no worries! Plan a “staycation” and have fun at home! Indulging in a few gluten-free travel toiletries can still get you excited about warmer weather at home and can also become motivation to do something exciting and cost-efficient around town!

Stock Up on These 8 Glamorous Gluten-Free Toiletries for Your Next Adventure:

1. Gluten-Free Hand Sanitizer: We all know that it’s not easy to wash your hands as often as you touch dirty, germy things when you travel. That’s why hand sanitizer was such a brilliant creation. But it always freaks me out to think of the chemicals used in hand sanitizer, and what might be even worse, if the hand sanitizer includes gluten! The Solution? Try EO Hand Sanitizer–the organic, plant-based alternative to chemical laden hand sanitizers and is also gluten-free. Organic Lavender Essential Oil is naturally cleansing and soothing. Organic Alcohol (non-GMO) sanitizes on contact. Soothing Jojoba nourishes and moisturizes. It keeps your hands clean as you travel, but even better than that, rest-assure that your hand sanitizer isn’t filled with gluten or scary, toxic chemicals!

2. Gluten-Free Toothpaste (Travel-Size): One of my favorite toothpastes is Tom’s of Maine brand. Free from artificial sweeteners, it uses real, natural flavored oils for taste. It’s incredible toothpaste that fights cavities, controls tarter, and whitens your teeth too! They even have travel-size all-natural toothpastes that make it easy to toss pack in your toiletry bag. My favorite flavor? Try the refreshing orange-mango toothpaste flavor which feels light and clean! It’s an exciting alternative to regular minty toothpaste flavors and can become a fun flavor to use on tropical trips and turn into a personal traveling tradition!

3. Gluten-Free Shampoo & Conditioner (Travel Size): Looking for a good gluten-free shampoo? Try the Morrocco Method 5 Elements Shampoos– Trial Size, which includes 4 different shampoos that are designed to be used in rotation so that all aspects of hair and scalp can be nourished and maintained. Pine Shale (Air) and Apple Cider Vinegar (Fire) Shampoos nourish the hair and stimulate growth. Sea Essence (Water) and Earth Essence (Earth) Shampoos detoxify and regenerate hair and scalp. Rotate all four for maximum care — Pine Shale today, Apple Cider Vinegar tomorrow, Sea Essence the next day, then Earth Essence, then back to Pine Shale Shampoo to continue the rotation cycle. Then try the Morrocco Method 5 Elements Conditioners– Trial Size, which includes a 2-ounce bottles of Diamond Crystal Mist, Volumizer Mist, and Chi Instant Conditioners plus a 1-ounce bottle of Euro Organic Oil and a 1-ounce package of Zen Detox Hair & Scalp Therapy. All shampoos and conditioners are gluten-free, color-safe, and organic! Truly fantastic!

4. Gluten-Free Anti-Fizz Hair Serum: I can’t believe something that’s organic works so well, but Giovanni’s Frizz Be Gone anti-frizz hair serum is phenomenal! After your usual shampoo and conditioner routine, apply a dime-sized amount to towel-dried hair and banish traveling frizziness! It also helps detangle dry hair that needs extra moisturizing. This stuff works miracles (I use it every single day) and will be a life-saver if you plan to go out and sit by the beach and don’t want to end up with a unsightly fro. It’s a little pricey, but trust me, it’s worth the investment!

5. Gluten-Free Soap: Using the Kauai Blossom Soap from the Dynamic Fragrance Soap Collection at EverAfter Naturals is an awesome, all-natural, and gluten-free choice to put you in the mood for a tropical get-away. Filled with island floral notes and a hint of ginger, this handcrafted soap will take you away to clear waters and white sand whether or not you’re really going on vacation! It smells great, cleans well, and leaves your skin silky and soft. Make sure you get a bar for your next trip! I’m a huge fan of this soap and this company- read my review of EverAfter Naturals here.

6. Gluten-Free Lip Balm: EverAfter Naturals gets another shout-out here for the super-amazing Moisturizing Lip Balm. It’s all natural, gluten-free, and full-on fabulous. Flavored with only pure plant oils, this lip balm contains no petroleum, artificial flavors or sweeteners. You’ll be amazed at how incredibly smooth this lip balm goes on and how long it lasts! The applicator is also more oval (while most lip balm or chapsticks are more round) which I think is a cool feature and a better fit for real lips! My favorite is the Berry flavor which gives your lips a really pretty, all-natural tint, which makes it perfect multi-tasking product for avoiding slathering on heavy-feeling lipsticks during your traveling, but still getting a beautiful touch of lip color.

7. Gluten-Free Sunscreen: Sunscreen is a must-have product for regular, every day, daily life- so obviously- you wouldn’t dare go without it as you run away to your sunny escapes! That said, California Baby No Fragrance  SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion is the hands-down winner. Unfragranced, PABA free, non-chemical, California Baby® sunscreen is perfect for those with skin sensitivities or fragrance allergies. California Baby’s active ingredient is a highly micronized titanium dioxide that scatters and reflects dangerous UV rays, offering UVA-UVB broad-spectrum protection. This lotion is simple and elegant; it glides on smoothly and will not slip off when it comes into contact with water, so you may rest assured that it will last. Non-staining formula, very water-resistant, and contains no gluten (whoo-hoo!), nut oils, soy, oat, or dairy! Love this stuff and TOTALLY worth the price.

8. Gluten-Free Body Lotion: I like my sunscreens to be scent-less so I can get crazy with the fun-stuff: body lotion. Get in the mood for fun and perhaps a pina colada (or two 🙂 ) with 100% Pure’s Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm! This body cream will make you happy whether you leave the house or not! This highly nourishing luxurious cream is concentrated with potent anti-aging antioxidants, vitamins, skin softening fruit oils and moisturizing cocoa and avocado butters. It’s a delicious smelling body cream that will immediately hydrate, soften and feed your skin nutrients for healthy, glowing skin. Truly, 100% Pure – never any toxic preservatives, artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals or anything else artificial Made only with highest quality, natural, organic nutrients for your skin. Vegetarian and gluten-free too! Yay.

Happy & Safe Gluten-Free Traveling!

Just Say No to Zits March 17, 2010

Burt Bees Herbal Blemish Stick One of the awesome things about going gluten-free is that my skin significantly cleared up.

As a teen, I actually went on Acutane THREE TIMES because my acne was so severe. For those that don’t know, Acutane is the very last option when NOTHING else has worked, most hardcore prescription medicine out there for acne. You actually are forced to take pregnancy tests every few weeks while your taking it because it can cause massive birth defects and retardation. Acutane is so crazy, it has even been linked to depression and even a few suicides! I never got depressed on Acutane, but it did give me massive headaches and make my bones weak, gave me super-weird dreams, and made my eyes, lips, and skin ridiculously (and painfully) dry while I was taking it. It was brutal.

The funny thing is that even after going through this medicine three times (once is usually more than enough for even the most severe patients), my acne would still flare up really bad at least once a month. My skin was still super-oily, but dry and flaky if I used harsh topical treatments on it. My skin was a nightmare.

But, I kid you not, as soon as I started eating gluten-free, my acne problems went completely out the window. It was unbelievable! All this time, I probably didn’t need to take any medicines at all… I just needed to adjust my diet! And not the typical advice of staying away from chocolate or french fries! I eat both of those things all the time and enjoy a great complexion! 🙂 I wish I would have known to eat gluten-free a lot earlier, but oh well, I am just so happy that I know now!

So even though my skin does well most the time, now I get the occasional, normal zit. It’s no big deal anymore and nothing like the kind of acne I used to have, but I still would prefer to have no zits rather than a few zits. So, what do I do? I like Burt Bee’s Herbal Blemish Stick. It makes me happy that for all the hardcore medicine I’ve had to take for acne, that I have found an all-natural approach to getting rid of pimples (going gluten-free and using acne-fighting products with all-natural ingredients).

It costs $8.50 for a .26 oz stick and you can find it at many grocery stores in the all-natural product section. You can also buy it directly from Burt Bees. The smell is pretty strong, but if you just dab it onto bumps or blemishes at night or in the morning, it’s not too bad. I usually wake up to find the zit is gone by morning after using it without any dryness! It’s great. Give it a try!

Here is more info about it:

Gettin’ Your Gummy On! March 4, 2010

Try Lil Critters Gummy Vites! Vitamins are usually the least glamorous thing on the planet. It’s like medicine… who wants to pop yucky pills every day to get a few extra nutrients, right? Sometimes I’d rather have a brussel sprout-spinach-kale-salmon-almond-and-blueberry-smoothie instead of taking my daily vitamin! Yeah… vitamins are THAT gross. 🙂

And if that wasn’t bad enough, I called a bunch of vitamin companies to inquire about their ingredients, and after listening to elevator music (for what seemed like FOREVER), none of the companies could confirm that their products were gluten-free! Many of them said that there could be gluten cross-contamination from other products that they manufactured as well. Uggh. I hung up the phone many, many times feeling frustrated… and totally confused!

Well, when my husband and I got pregnant (yay! I am currently 24 weeks pregnant with my first baby- a little boy!), I was even more concerned about getting gluten-free vitamins. Every pregnancy book or magazine you read, it states in bold print: YOU NEED TO TAKE PRENATAL VITAMINS. Besides getting the nutrients you need to make a baby, getting at least 40 mg of Folic Acid is  apparently absolutely critical to help avoid super-scary baby-health problems!

I felt like I was going to have a panic attack as prenatal vitamins were impossible to come by too! I even ask my Gynecologist if she had any gluten-free prenatal vitamins and even she wasn’t sure that any they had were GF! Yikes!

So, imagine my RELIEF when I came across a brand of gluten-free vitamins! And not your ordinary gluten-free variety…  GUMMY BEAR GLUTEN-FREE VITAMINS!!!

WARNING: Lil’ Critters Gummy Bear Vitamins are sooo unbelievably good, you’ll want to eat them like, well, REAL gummy bear candies!

These gummy-vitamins are super soft and chewy, and REALLY, taste just like candy. They’re totally fabulous! And guess what? Gummy Vites have no wheat, gluten, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts or soy. They also have no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. …SWEET!

I asked my OBGYN if I could take these gluten-free vitamins for my prenatal vitamins, and she said yes! I just take two a day, and I’m good to go!

I absolutely love these vitamins and think their perfect for any kid or adult that doesn’t want vitamin-time to be torturous! Life should always be delicious- even when you’re being healthy!
